| So as previously mentioned, I made a purchase through DSN. Because I'm pissed, here's the product review: I bought a solar-powered car fan gadet that attaches to the window. It's supposed to draw out the hot, stale air in the car. On the one hand, it actually does activate via sunlight and the little fan does in fact start spinning. On the other hand, if it is actually DOING anything, the difference between my car at 101 degrees and 100 isn't noticeable. Dammit. I need to get NH to change the Draconian tinting laws. If anyone wants to help me, definitely let me know. I can't do this on my own (and as Adam knows, I've tried). |
| | Nope... | | elliot's reply on Jun 18th 2006 10:10am EDT |
| Unfortunately, all is not well with window tinting, at least according to what the DMV currently provides on the internet. Gbarr, I drive a coupe, so the law really sucks the most for me, but I assume this is still relevant to those of us who want to tint: http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/XXI/266/266-58-a.htm [Read more] |

| I think that Adam posted this earlier but supposedly NH now allows 35 percent on the front windows and 20 on the rest. That's what I've got on the Viggen (and will on the TDI once it arrives) - looks sharp and is very functional. |

| I do the UV-Boston-UV commute on a regular basis and have noticed that a number of drivers (out-of-state in particualr) seem to have been taught how to drive by a different set of standards than I was - some, perhaps, having no formal training at all. In an effort to clear things up, I have devised 10 simple rules for driving in New Hampshire. (Feel free to add any I missed)
Before entering NH please be advised of the following driving rules:

I'm looking to buy a new car within the next couple of months. Well, not necessarily new. It could be used, but I'd like one with less than like 30K miles.
I've looked at Subaru Imprezas (by Snow's recommendation), and I've been looking casually at Jeeps and used Audis. I'd prefer something with AWD, because I need something that will perform in the snow. I'm looking to spend somewhere between $20K-$30K. Suggestions? |
| | | | snow's reply on Jun 13th 2005 4:44pm EDT |
| I still think a Subaru is his best bet. For the money, in that price range, nothing else compares. |

Damn big pimpin... if you're looking to drop over 20-large on a new ride straight outta school than you either
a) have no student loans
b) have a fatty job
c) have yet to see how much rent is in Boston
d) all of the above
Seriously though, ask Snow about the dangers of having a nice car in Boston. My esperience is that everyone drives / parks like a complete ass and cars get dinged all the time. My Viggen has a couple battle wounds from the Beantown area.
I would stick with a used (pre-2002) vehicle so that insurance and the initial costs are less. Worst case you can always upgrade a few years down the road to an even better ride rather than scraping every penny to support a really nice car now.
Oh, and since everyone is representing their breed here, I'll plug 1999-2002 Saab Viggens. The 2-door hardtop is a very very fast car and handles like a fucking champ. You should be able to pick one up with low miles for well under $20k (closer to $15k). |

| | Audi | | trolld's reply on May 26th 2005 4:19pm EDT |
| A 1.8T after '99 is going to be nice regardless of the rated HP. You're going to want to chip it anyway ($220) and that'll turn the car into what it was supposed to be (200+hp), regardless of what the engine is when you get it (150 or the "new" 170hp). Its all the same engine, just better code and more boost. After 2000 you get the DBW (drive by wire) engines which do represent a nice improvement, though your HP numbers will only be slightly higher.
And good god the boost is awesome. You want a specific recomendation? Get a 1.8T / Quattro / 5 spd A4. They're not the fastest thing on the road, but you'll be doin good with 200hp and a swift kick in the pants with the low end torque you get from a turbo charged engine. And you'll look good too. Even the A4, being at the entry level of the Audis, have a very nice fit and finish inside and out. Truely a nice taste of luxury without breaking the bank.
Finally, regardless of the vehicle you do choose, Get an extended warranty. 5 yr / 100,000 mile at least. It'll add ~1,200$ to the price but trust me, its worth the piece of mind and the predictability, escpecially as you're just getting started in the working world. |

| Sounds like you are looking in the right direction. In my family we are definitely fans of Audi. My brother has a slightly used A4 out in CA and he loves it. I think my parents like theirs too. If you go for a used Audi try to get one of the more recent models (2001+ I think) where they bumped the engine's hp from 150 to 170 (if you are looking at the 1.8t model line). I used to drive a Subaru and while it was no love affair, I can say that those cars are amazing in the snow. Good luck and be sure to let us all know what you end up buying! |

| So I was pulling out of a stoplight on the off ramp from I89 this morning. Sometimes 1st gear is a little rough to get into so it took me a second to get moving after the light had turned green. This saved my car, and quite possibly my life.

| I had that exact same experiance about 3 months ago getting of the off-ramp of I89 and 12A. I was slow at putting the Ranger into first and it saved mine and laurie's life. This big Gold Dodge came barreling through a red. I hate the feeling you get in your gut after you realize that you almost were a statistic because of someones blatant stupidity. |

| So last night I was on my way to a party and the guy behind me crashed his car into the rear of my car at about 50 mph. Apparently his brakes failed. His Audi TT was totalled & my car was not a pretty sight either. I got hit so hard that I hit the car in front of me and my car was lifted off the ground. The only silver lining to this crappy experience is that I can hopefully say good bye to the subaru and get something a little nicer. O, and ALWAYS wear your seatbelt! I think mine saved my ass since my airbag failed to go off, that would have meant I'd have gotten to know my steering wheel/windshield on a much more intimate level than I'd ever want. Thank you parents/cheesy public service ads for brainwashing me into always wearing my belt! |

| A guy I know crashed his Audi TT in turn 5 at Mosport in 2003. Brake failure. His braking system apparently didn't think so much brake force could possibly be generated and went into "ice mode." Apparently race tires and braking with suspension compression on an uphill is something Audi's engineers didn't account for.
Then, about a year later when he'd finally put the car back together he went to Watkins Glen. Crashed again near the Bus Stop. Brake failure. Again.
I am never, ever, buying an Audi. |
