| A few of you may already be clued into what is fast becoming one of the worst Windows vulnerabilities in recent history but for those who are not "in the know" here is what you need to know - your Windows computer is at risk, period. If you care about the technical mumbojumbo read on, otherwise download the patch (either link, same file) and install it then reboot. Do it now. This is not a joke.

Microsoft released a security update to do the same thing this patch does - so you can get your Windows Update on and solve this problem...

| One of the coolest pieces of multimedia software around is VLC Media Player from Media LAN. In addition to being a lightweight and extremely functional video player for every possible content format including DVDs it also has a plethora of other cool features.

Rarely do I get so excited over a new piece of technology that I spend a few hours writing up a summary of it including many details that, otherwise, would go unreported in a typical DSN post. Fortunately for you lot I've done just that so read on and enjoy!
I last used a Palm device in college to keep track of homework assignments, due dates, and to pass the time in Econ 201 playing Dope Wars. This was an archaic Palm IIIxe that left GDT with me back in 1999 – a far cry from a modern personal organizer – but suffice to say it was more than capable of handling the routine calendar, contacts, and task list that I live and die by. There were two glaring issues with using a Palm in my view. First, the shitty Palm Desktop software that acted as my home base on the PC/Mac (you could purchase an additional software sync package for use with Outlook.) Second, it meant that I had to carry another device in my pocket or on my hip – a fashion faux pas to say the least. In the end I shelved my Palm III, went through a handful of mediocre cellular phones, and all the while kept wishing that I could find a single, affordable, "right size" device that would work with me.
I kept thinking 'Wouldn’t it be great if I could combine the power of my Palm with the everyday convenience of a mobile phone?' Enter the Treo 650.

| CNet has an interesting article about where Google is headed. It suggests that thin terminals and network services may be the wave of the future. It seems like we keep hearing this from Microsoft and others, yet the personal computer is still going strong. I am curious to hear what you guys think the future holds--any predictions for Adam's little PHP time capsule that we call DSN? |

| This was Sun's next big thing some years back and it didn't really catch on then either. That this author doesn't mention this suggests to me that she's something a newcomer to reporting on the technology industry. So does this:
"Remember Bill Gates saying, 10 years ago, that traditional software was dead and that all software would eventually be delivered over the Internet? Well, I think Google was listening."
Uh, hello? Have you ever heard of open source software? Half of the world's open source operating systems have had package systems for add-on software that are entirely Internet based for years now. In the case of FreeBSD, you boot using a pair of floppy disks and then install the entire operating system via FTP over an Internet connection. Using PXE boot you don't even need the floppy disks.
People will continue to improve upon HTTP and its related protocols and will continue to create new and incredible cool things like maps.google.com. The web being the centerpiece of the Internet for the common user more or less dictates this. And thin-client technologies will probably find a niche in the mobile computing industry. By which I mean cell phones and PDAs, not laptops.
They'll find this niche because they bring added power to the mobile computing device, however. The drive is to cram more and more features into ever more portable devices, not strip features away. Any thin-client device like this would inevitably be a step down in terms of power and flexibility from the standard PC. For certain demographics of users, this will be completely acceptable. But there will always be other demographics for whom the standard desktop PC is the only way to do things. Consider graphic designers, as just one example. These are users who require gobs of local computing power, RAM, and - most importantly - desktop real-estate. I don't see that changing any time soon.
Bottom line, there is no one-size fits all solution in the computing world. Same thing with cars. Some people drive sedans, some convertibles, some trucks, some motorcycles, some scooters, and some people actually propel themselves on bicycles. I'm sure the death knell of the bicycle was rung long and loud in Henry Ford's day. The much heralded death of the PC is no different.
Here's a different thought for you to ponder. Google is quite clearly the next Microsoft, and they've earned their success. But look at where Microsoft is now. World dominant, sure, but also reviled. Ten to twenty years down the line I think Google will have a very different image. |

Well now that Halo 2 is officially everyone's favorite hobby it's time to startup Team DSN...
But woe be those of us who don’t have / cant afford a Live system, and for those who have a modded Xbox you're in for a nasty shock when you try it with Halo 2 - regardless of whether you have the chip on or off. Fear not for there is a solution.
Enter XB Connect. The word ‘SWEEEET’ doesn’t begin to do this product justice. Non-Live games? Play em online. Don’t want to pay the MS tax for Live? Again, no problem. Do yourself a favor and download XB Connect and give it a shot. The site is wicked helpful too :-)

For those of you not in the loop or those interested in a little more information I offer my own first-hand account of installation and use of this critical (yeah, right) Windows XP update.

So I was updating a machine this AM and at the end of the install Windows Update totally borked on me...
Upon rebooting and going to Windows Update again I found a brand new interface for the site that matches 2003 Server's interface. At first glance they've dumbed some things down, but overall I say it's very slick - take a peek. |

| Just FYI, many major OEM's are recommending that customers do not install SP2 onto their systems. My experience with SP2 was a mixture of frustration (too locked down) and dismay (still tons of spyware/adware holes). Long review made short: Stick with SP1 and critical updates. |

| I ran across PowerNotebooks.com last week, someone on bf.c posted a link them when another member was asking about high end laptops. If you are even thinking about buying a mid- to high-end laptop READ THIS. Then take a look at their prices.. I did a little comparison between the the prices. "Hollywood Silver - Extreme" @$4904, vs same specs from PowerNotebooks.com, Sager NP4780 FORCE @$2425. Good stuff, you could get two for the prices they charge.. They also have versions of the 17" w/ 1440x900 for <$1600..[Read more] |

| Well, no crap right:
This article on Yahoo! Finance outlines it. Quite hilarious, yet not. The points brought up aren't new, but in this age of "Homeland Security" its scary to see how backwards we are moving on the technology front. Kinda erodes faith in the other actions that the goverment is taking.
My favourite quote is:
"Ironically," Geer continued, "Microsoft's efforts to deny interoperability of Windows with legitimate non-Microsoft applications have created an environment in which Microsoft programs interoperate efficiently only with Internet viruses." |

| Well, in my searching this afternoon for any way to start ripping music off a SHOUTcast server, I found this program (linked to download page for it, not direct to program). Now, you can buy the v. 1.5, which gives you all sorts of little bonuses, but quite frankly the free version 1.3.2 (downloadable from right there) is enough for me... Suggest anyone who wants to download off any SHOUTcast hosts, this is a great way to do it. |
